TITLE: LAND SPEED RECORD (BREAKING THE BARRIER)
TYPED: ZIPPO/INDEPENDENT
Since 1983 the land speed record has been held at an amazing speed of
633.468 miles per hour, the car which set this record was English named
THURST 2 and driven by Mr R.Noble.
Now over 10 years later and many attempts of people trying to break this
record, Mcclaren of Formula 1 fame are currently in production of the
vehice which they feel will beat the old record and also go though the
sound barrier which is around the 750 miles per hour mark. The new
MCclaren car will be named the "MAVERICK".
The Maverick will be powered mainly by a TURBO UNION RB199 mark 104
which normally powers a Tornado mark 3 Aircraft. The vehicle will
weight will be no more than 3000kg and will be 14 meters in length, 4
meters wide and 2 meters high. The wheel arrangements will be 2 wheels
close together at the front of the vehicle and 2 at rear placed as far
apart as possible. The vehicle will be shaped very much like a Dart.
The wheels will have to rotate at some 10000 revolutions per minute and
will be made from forged Titanium.
Aeroplanes have been breaking the sound barrier since 1949 when Chuck
Yeager broke though the barrier in the BELL X1 aircraft, but land based
vehicles are a much different kettle of fish. The problem is that just
before Sonic (750 miles per hour) all areodymaics which normally apply
to land based vehicles goes straight out of the window. This is the main
problem which the MCLAREN engineers must first work out.
So far the project has cost some £250,000 and it is only at the mock up
stage, large sponsership will be required to complete the project. It
has been said that Mclaren will deciced some time in July if the project
is feasable.
We will have to wait and see.
